Coloring with the Kids
After their Grandmom colored with them one Saturday they began asking me daily to do it too. I conceded and decided I'd play around with some of the color techniques I learned over the years. It was fun...I'd welcome the chance to add color to line work any day!
Grim Reaper Meets His Match Ink and Watercolor Painting
The inspiration for this ink and watercolor painting was, "The grim reaper stumbling onto something cute/beautiful and having second thoughts about it..." I've had moments with my children when I felt angry about their behavior; they show me something, say something or do something which instantly melts me to forgive and forget. Parental love is wonderful like that.

Rainy Day Coming Elephant and C is for Creativity
This evening I was hanging out with my girls at the kitchen table. They coloring and myself drawing. I couldn't see myself coloring in one of their books however as an artist to draw the objects then color is just fine. You see my logic here right? So now I have this character in my pocket size kitchen Moleskine. Going along with the theme of A to Z of Me I finished my C is for Creative page. The D.A.R.E. was Evel Knievel formula for success and it seemed to flow well with my page theme. It's the only Smash book page I could use Copic markers on without fear of bleed through since the page behind was black.

Letter F - Frog and Fairy in Flowers
It's a new month, I was going through the blogs 30 day stats and came across something that I hadn't taken notice of before. Comments, 844 in the year since June 2011 when I turned the comment form on. Amazing. I read back through a bunch of them. I'm so filled with joy to have had so many wonderful people's support. Thank you.
On to the art. Letter F. For any doubters he's done and so cute, I just love him. The fairy looks like she's holding up her hands like Richard Nixon's, "I am not a crook." moment. I really didn't know what she was doing up there but the frog was terribly patient. I've really been enjoying creating in children's illustration style. Bouncing around from E to G definitely gave me a chance to make this one even better and I'm pleased with the results.

Letter G - Game Playing Giraffe and Goeldi Monkey
Okay so there were no self imposed rules with the Alphabet Inspired characters that I'm creating so I went ahead and skipped F's final piece and went straight to G. I was excited about this one it's just so darn cute.
I was a little tripped up with the monkey but as I told my daughter it was cute and I had to have it. She went online and found a breed that had a G name thanks to her the whole piece works just a little better.
I have a plan for F just nothing in final form I read in an art newsletter that it may not be helpful to speak in future terms with our artistic plans. In my case I disagree for me it solidifies accountability and I'm all about that. A little wondering around never hurts either just as long as the final destination is project completion.

Letter E - Exercising Elephants Wearing Earphones
I enjoyed creating the character for this letter so much that I decided to make two a male and a female. Letter E so these two are exercising elephants wearing earphones. I drew the line work last night but was too tired to add the color. It worked out better that way since I'm still a little high strung from a busy day.
Today was preschool open house for Isabelle which she loved, I should have known she would. Afterward we had to run around and take care of errands. When we got back instead of settling down I got going with the laundry that I let pile up a bit in anticipation of today.

I could lie and say it's because I'm busy planning but it's just my head work playing out scenarios about how it's going to go. It's one of my many idiosyncrasies that's happily neurotic. That's me and my huge pile of stinky laundry. Which now I have to get back to because the dryer is singing my praises.

Letter D - Trust Me?
This is one of those very few occasions when my HP Photosmart scanner has let me down. This picture has a delicious chocolate donut with rich vibrant pink icing and for some reason my scanner keeps spitting it out looking less than appetizing. My camera phone isn't very crisp with the lines but it did a much better job capturing the colors. How's this for nailing the letter 'C' a cute cat with a chocolate chip cookie dipping it in a cup?

Letter B - Bouncing Baby Blue Bird
On my mission to stay creative I've gone to the next inspirational letter B. Bouncing baby blue bird on a ball. I don't know if all the pieces I draw will have this much of the letter used but it worked out well this time.
Beach Pals - Panda and Polar Bears
I've really been enjoying working in children's illustrative format this weekend. There are quite a few works in progress once I have them completed I'll get them posted.
The idea for this drawing came from a fellow artists profile information explaining that she liked polar bears and pandas. I'm always jumping at chances to draw pandas, my daughters love them and I see their stuffed animals around all the time.
As I was adding color to these two I kept having this sneaking feeling that something wasn't right but I couldn't put my finger on what it was. Finally when I was about to add the pandas black I realized what was wrong. I had only drawn them with one arm each and that was the arm that was hugging. Tragedy averted with a little draw in.

Letter A - Alligator Ate an Apple
I'm in between projects right now. Read a book? Play a video game? Watch a movie? Nah, I took this time to brainstorm and come up with a little art play time. I decided to use the alphabet to spur my imagination. Growing up I always hated how the classroom letters above the board only had one plain boring object to go with the letter. For example A is for Apple. Here's my spin on the alphabet picture prompts. I was going to draw in the letter too but decided since I'm only using the letter for inspiration there was no need to include it graphically. I don't know if I'll do the entire 26 piece set but at least it gives me something constructive to do with my hands when I have the down time.
Undersea Turtle
This great little sea turtle is an artist trading card special request for something turtle related. I felt more whimsical this time and just love his colors. The overall feel of the piece is like a children's book illustration.

At Peace with my Artwork
I enjoy when someone chooses multiple subjects for me to do. These three artist trading cards were chosen by the same person but were so completely different I just loved drawing them. This Jetty Gull is my favorite luckily since this is the third attempt. This is the second time for the Raccoon Mama and Cold Nose Warm Heart. It's always a pleasure when the newer pieces come out stronger.

Raccoon Mother and Baby
07-28-2012 This artist trading card size drawing was a special request for a raccoon mother and baby. I always love creating cards that stir up an inner personal meaning for me. This one in particular reminds me of a book I read to my girls called, The Kissing Hand by Audry Penn although my style is different than the illustrators Ruth Harper and Nancy Leak. I took a more whimsical approach to the scene with the mom hugging her baby.

07-24-2012 These lemurs were an ATC done for a special request. I considered revisiting previously drawn pieces but decided to go with something fresh. Using different markers, paper and technique gave them a completely different look.
Bandanna Animals
04-07-2012 I just finished up these cards for the ATC swap Animals with Bandannas at the ATCs for All forum, check out their site at the link button on the right. Made with Pitt brush markers for the dots and watercolors.
Outdated Robots ATCs
01-16-2012 At ATCs for All I had to choose from a list of 100 things to draw for the swap, I chose Outdated Robots. For my research I found a Jukebox, Manual Washing Machine and a Typewriter and altered them to have robot characteristics. I drew them with Sepia Pitt Pens and added color with Copics. The Copics never work well on this particular paper so the colors aren't as crisp as they could be. I originally wasn't planning on adding color to them that's why I used that paper but they looked too plain. Otherwise they were fun to create I see why so many artists create characters. I could imagine the way they would interact if they were in a movie together.

100 Card Challenge 57 thru 66
09-17-2011 Holy cow it's been almost a year that I have been working on this project. Now keep in mind I did take a some time off to have a baby in Dec 2010 so I will give myself a little break.
This time I upped the count to ten completed together. Basically I take out my little notebook jot down the items and brainstorm them for a day or two. Then another day or three to study the objects/subjects that need to be drawn. A day for loose sketch, a day for good line work. A week to procrastinate color decisions. You get the idea. It's a process.
I found Sacrifice to be the most relatable card. As a mother I know the feeling of putting the little ones first. Also I liked this piece because I used a couple of the color cues from Mona Lisa. I felt these colors made a powerful impact on the overall mood. Kick in the Head was the most impossible item to come up with. The drawing was more of a quitter choice than a devine selection. I was really thinking about drawing a soccer players foot kicking a toilet but thought better of it. No Way Out, Rejection, Do Not Disturb, Multitasking and Traps were all pretty simple animal and plant themed cards. Which I usually do a lot of, they are in my comfort zone. I am not a huge fan of horror items so when I drew Horror I made it more of a cutesy humor subject. Fairy Tale and Magic were my favorites of this batch. 100 Card Challenge 52 thru 56
08-30-2011 Five more cards completed for the 100 card challenge. It's a frustrating challenge at times I get discouraged and want to throw the list away. I mean let's face it, it's a personal goal and I can quit at any time. Then I get pissed off at myself and push through the emotions and just get it done.
Deep in Thought is a cat concentrating on a goldfish. Not just any cat but a blue cat, love the color. Keeping a Secret is a locked door to an old barn. I liked imaging treasures of all shapes and sizes behind that entrance. Tower is a goofy whimsy appoach to an old abandoned castle tower. When I thought of Waiting the first and only thing that came to my mind was those ridiculous number taking machines that we stare at as we wait after taking our numbers. As if thinking why didn't you give me a better number than this?!?!? Finally for this round of cards is the Danger Ahead turtle. I think the danger is more for the dandelion. I've been on a real dandelion kick lately. Go figure.
