M is for Mindfulness

After much deliberation on the subject I decided to add a fancy rat to the family.  Her name is S'mores and she is about 6 weeks old.  I haven't owned a rat in sixteen years.  At that time I raised a male Siamese rat named Snoopy.  He was a great pet, it's unfortunate that they don't have longer lives and that was my main hesitation for revisiting them as pets.  No sense in the end keeping me from enjoying the journey right?  This art journal page was written, gesso covered, stenciled, doodled and revisited on three different occasions before the final subject came to rest on it.  It was the first page in the book maybe that's why it was such a struggle to nail down.

  1. I love those special words 'from a mothers heart' in this scripture.

I had rats in middle school and part of high school. They weren't fancy ones, just the black and white variety..they were quite the characters and very smart too.

    Have a lovely weekend. xo

  8. S'mores looks so cute sitting in that sea of greens. I had a white rat growing up, and cried dearly when he died. Blessings!

  10. This brings back memories. I last had a Russian Blue rat. Kindof defeated the purpose of having a pet rat, rather than a dog--her soft fur made me sneeze, too! I had never been interested in pet rats--my sisters and neighbors had them when we were growing up. My husband and I got started because he found a nest with two infant packrats as he cleared brush. We raised them--they lived three years, far longer than the purchased rats we got later. Ratso and Whimpy were always wild--more interesting than cuddly. The later domestic rats had such wonderful personalities. My husband no longer allows them, though, because he was so attached and, as you said, they didn't live long. Our latest pet is a squirrel that we rescued two years ago. We released her after a few months, but she visits most days to pickup snacks. She's quite a character, too. I wish you happy times with Snoopy and will look forward to hearing more about her.

  14. What a great name! I have no idea what S'mores actually are but I hear about them on American tv shows all the time!

I read about fancy rats recently and before that had never considered them as companion animals but I definitely would now (the fact they are veggie is a bonus as I hate feeding my dogs that gross food they eat!!)I had no idea they were so intelligent or indeed that they could be so affectionate but I would definitely think of adding to the family (not while my terriers are still here though as that might be a bridge too far!)
    Great illustration too!

  19. Mary, this is my first time visiting your blog but I know I will be back. So many things I love all in one place: amazing watercolors, the sweetest little rat, contemplative scripture, you are a homeschooling family and you live at the Jersey shore! I want s'more of S'mores, especially because I miss my rats, Misha and Brooke very much. Darn their short lives! You captured the intelligence and personality of S'more so beautifully.
    Thanks, Jeanne
